Vioxx can be most hazardous if taken longer than 18 months, although there have been reports of side effects after taking Vioxx for a shorter time. Typically, side effects such as heart attack and stroke occur within 6 months of taking Vioxx.

Recently, the safety of Vioxx has come under serious scrutiny. During the summer of 2001, several studies where released that suggested that Vioxx may be responsible for an increasing the incidence of blood clots, heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems. In August 2001, Vioxx was linked in a study by researchers from The Cleveland Clinic to an increase in the risk of blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. Their study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and was based on a review and analysis of previous clinical trials.

The study, an analysis of a database of 1.4 million Kaiser Permanente members, found that those who took Vioxx were more likely to suffer a heart attack or sudden cardiac death than those who took Celebrex, Vioxx's main rival. Based on their findings, Graham and his collaborators linked Vioxx to more than 27,000 heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths nationwide from the time it came on the market in 1999 through 2003.
