LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- "A History of Violence," which premiered at Cannes this past May, will receive its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The original soundtrack will be released on New Line Records on October 11th. "A History of Violence" marks the 11th collaboration between director David Cronenberg and composer Howard Shore ("The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy, "King Kong").
Violence in the media is capable of having an indelible, negative impact on youth. Ralph Lewis writes that the mass media occupies a significant portion of time in the daily lives of Americans, and that a large proportion of television offerings portray violent, aggressive behavior. Recent surveys indicate that about 98 percent of American households have one or more televisions; the television is on about 28 hours a week for children 2 to 11 years of age and about 23 hours a week for teenagers. Research shows there are about five to six violent acts per hour on prime time and about 20 to 25 violent acts on Saturday morning children's programs. These violent acts account for about 188 hours of violent programming per week, or about 15 percent of all program time.

Violence has always been inherent in the system. The standard greeting in America is a punch in the face. In France they say goodbye with a kick in the junk before running away. Australians use violence in every situation from birth to death. Make sure when visiting another country to brush up on violence traditions and customs. It would be really awkward to give a man in Albania a concussion when a laceration would have been more appropriate.
Violence is often pursued as an antidote to shame or humiliation. The mistaken concept here is that violence is a source of pride and a defense of honor. “Are you going to stand for that?” “Are you going to take that from him?” “Show him what you are made of” are typical challenges. But the mistaken belief that violent acts can increase pride confuses dominance with stature. Pride is based on stature—the ability to help—not on dominance—the ability to harm. Although stature and dominance are both sources of power, they are not not both sources of pride.
