Violence: Victims
built 288 days ago
Violence in the streets is carrying over into the schools, where students are ... becoming victimized. In a 1993 nationwide survey of public and private school students in grades 9 through 12, 11.8 percent of those surveyed reported carrying weapons on campus in the previous month, and 24 percent reported they were offered, sold or given an illegal drug at school in the previous year. In another 1993 national survey, 4 percent of students said they had taken a gun to school in the past year, and 59 percent said they could get a handgun if they "wanted one." Of those who said they could get a handgun, two out of three said they could get one within 24 hours.

Violence has ... occurred in Canada, where three doctors have been attacked to date. There is speculation that the timing of the shootings is related to the Canadian observance of Remembrance Day. The physicians were part of pattern of attacks, which targeted providers in Canada and upstate New York, including Dr. Barnett Slepian. All victims were shot in their homes with a rifle, at dusk, in late October or early November. James Kopp was charged with the murder of Dr. Slepian and the attempted murder of Dr. Short; he is suspected of having committed the other shootings as well.[9][10]
Violence incurs a similar debt. While violence may provide a thrilling way to solve an immediate problem and generate some attention and excitement, it comes at a substantial and long lasting cost. These costs include: the immediate physical and mental harm to the victim, the long-term harm to the victim, the hatred that often results; the revenge, retaliation, reparations, and punishments that often follow; relationships that are damaged instead of healed, wounds that are torn open; guilt, shame, and humiliation; spreading fear, and the long-lasting sadness and bitterness that often result.
