Violence: Children
built 288 days ago
Violence impacts the lives of millions each year. The smallest victims remain the most vulnerable. In 1984, the Center for the Vulnerable Child (CVC) was founded at the Los Angeles County and USC Medical Center (LAC+USC) for the purpose of better serving children and families impacted by child abuse and neglect. The CVC established a prototype Child Advocacy Center with a multidisciplinary team for the evaluation, treatment and investigation of child abuse and neglect. Today the CVC remains the largest child abuse center in California.
Violence is ubiquitous in American mass media. An average American youth will witness 200,000 violent episodes on television alone before age 18.6 Violence is often considerable, even in programs which are not advertised as violent. Overall, weapons appear on prime time television an average of 9 times each hour.7 An estimated 54 percent of American children can watch this programming from the privacy of their own bedrooms.8
