A 10-inch gramophone blank for self recording with 78 rpm, 1948, brand as material "Decelith" with special surface for hardening In 1930, RCA Victor launched the first commercially available vinyl long-playing record, marketed as "Program Transcription" discs. These revolutionary discs were designed for playback at 33⅓ rpm and pressed on a 30 cm diameter flexible plastic disc. In Roland Gelatt's book The Fabulous Phonograph, the author notes that RCA Victor's early introduction of a long-play disc was a commercial failure for several reasons including the lack of affordable, reliable consumer playback equipment and consumer wariness during the Great Depression.[1]

Some records are pressed on coloured vinyl or with paper pictures embedded in them ("picture discs"). These discs can become collectors' items in some cases. Certain 45-rpm RCA or RCA Victor "Red Seal" records used red translucent vinyl for extra "Red Seal" effect. During the 1980s there was a trend for releasing singles on coloured vinyl — sometimes with large inserts that could be used as posters. This trend has been revived recently and has succeeded in keeping 7" singles a viable format.
The rule of thumb for ordering extra stampers for regular weight records is; one set of stampers per 1,000 records, plus one extra set for all colored vinyl jobs. For HQ-180 records it is; one set of stampers per 500 records. At least one extra set of stampers will be made on colored vinyl jobs to minimize downtime when a stamper change is needed.

A note about "basic service": This service utilizes some default software settings that yield good results for a broad range of vinyl records in good condition. This means that, occasionally, some (not much) noise will remain. The average listener won't even notice it, BUT, if you're the type of person that puts on headphones to hear every note, you might, so "hourly" service may be for you.
