Vincristine: Treatment
built 617 days ago
Vincristine (... called Oncovin or VCR) is a chemotherapy agent used in the treatment of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's Lymphoma / Disease. It is more often than not given in conjunction with other chemotherapy agents in a multidrug regimen. An antineoplastic, vincristine interferes with the growth of cancer cells - it does this by inhibiting microtubule production on cells. It is in the vinca alkaloid family of drugs which includes vinblastine, a very different drug, sometimes used to treat Hodgkin's Disease. Both vinblastine and vincristine are used in the Stanford V regimen whereas vincristine alone is used in CHOP. Originally derived from the Madagascar periwinkle plant Catharanthus roseus.

Vincristine is in a class of drugs known as vinca alkaloids. It slows or stops the growth of cancer cells in your body. The length of treatment depends on the types of drugs you are taking, how well your body responds to them, and the type of cancer you have.

Vincristine can cause constipation that may lead to a serious problem called paralytic ileus. Tell your doctor right away if you get constipation with severe abdominal pain or muscle cramping. Before starting treatment, your doctor or nurse will likely discuss ways to reduce the occurrence of constipation.

The treatment regimen to be used in this trial is the combination of Thalidomide and VAD (Vincristine, Adriamycin, Dexamethasone). Standard dose of the VAD (Vincristine, Adriamycin, Dexamethasone) regimen will given every 4 weeks. Thalidomide will be started at 100mg, every day, orally at bedtime on day 1 of cycle #1 or 2 of VAD and continued for 4 months (or 4 weeks after the 4th cycle of VAD regimen). Thalidomide will be stopped 10 days prior to high dose cyclophosphamide for stem cell mobilization.

Why it is prescribed: Vincristine is chemotherapy that is given as a treatment for some types of cancer. Vincristine is used to treat Kaposi's sarcoma (a type of cancer) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Kaposi's sarcoma has become the fourth most common AIDS-defining illness. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are a category of cancers that have become increasingly common in people with AIDS.
