The location of this particular spot was less than a mile from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine where Van Gogh was renting at the time. Sine painting at night was more challenging it intrigued Va Gogh. He carefully chose the location for the Starry Night over the Rhone which captured the reflections of the gas lighting in Arles across the glimmering blue water of the Rhône. Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853, the oldest of eight children. In his youth, he lacked direction. The emotional and mental problems that later plagued him were in evidence even in his childhood, when he was often noticeably distracted or even dazed. He made an attempt to live normally in the world, working as an art dealer, a minister and a teacher, but suffering failure in each case.

The first weeks of 1889 would not be easy for Vincent van Gogh. After his recovery, Vincent returned to his Yellow House, but continued to visit Dr. Rey for examinations and to have his head dressings changed. Vincent was encouraged by his progress after the breakdown, but his money problems continued and he felt particularly depressed when his close friend, Joseph Roulin (1841-1903), decided to accept a better paying position and move with his family to Marseilles. Roulin had been a dear and faithful friend to Vincent for most of his time in Arles.
