Vincent Van Gogh: Van Goghs
built 286 days ago
For the new Vincent Van Gogh gin out of Holland, don't come expecting the original Dutch gin-genever-because this one's the juniper-driven version. Ten botanicals, triple distillation, and a little more alcohol left in the still column-47 percent instead of the 40 we often taste here-yield what the Plymouth people call "Navy strength". There's just a hint of sweetness at the front, a good kick to the taste buds, and even more of a kick to the wallet-$39.99 puts it in the midrange at the LDB-but it's a worthy addition to the freezer, ready to make a fine succession of festive martinis.

In the early months of 1885 Van Gogh continued his series of portraits of peasants. Vincent viewed these as "studies", works which would continue to refine his craft in preparation for his most ambitious work to date. Vincent laboured throughout March and April on these studies, briefly distracted from his work by the death of his father on 26 March. Vincent and his father had maintained a severely strained relationship over the last few years and, while certainly not happy about his father's death, Vincent was quite emotionally detached and continued his work.

Van Gogh arrived at Auvers on May 21, 1890. He painted a portrait of Dr. Gachet and portraits of his daughters, as well as the Church of Auvers. The blue of the Auvers period was not the full blue of Arles but a more mysterious, flickering blue. In his last painting, the Cornfield with Crows, Van Gogh showed a topsy-turvy world. The spectator himself becomes the object of perspective, and it is toward him that the crows appear to be flying.
Vincent leaves England and takes a temporary job in a bookshop. As with his Goupil & Cie position, Vincent shows little interest and behaves abrasively toward his colleagues and clients. Vincent then pursues religious studies in Amsterdam.
