Vincent Van Gogh: Paintings
built 656 days ago
Van Gogh was born in 1853 in the village of Zundert in the province of Brabant. At a young age he travelled across the Netherlands and Europe. In 1885, in Nuenen, he painted the famous picture “The Potato Eaters”, a dark portrait of a peasant family. The following year he went to Paris. Van Gogh’s brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris, showed him paintings and drawings of the Impressionists, artists whose use of colour and light was more refined than what Vincent was used to. Vincent was ... impressed by the Japanese prints he viewed.

Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland, on March 30, 1853, to Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus as the second oldest child of six. Though he was involved in two serious relationships, Van Gogh never married. He did have a close relationship with his younger brother, Theodorus (Theo). After a long stint of physical illness and mental instability, Van Gogh died on July 29, 1890, in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) believed that drawing was “the root of everything.” A self-taught artist, he succeeded, between 1881 and 1890, in developing an inimitable graphic style. This book traces the artist’s successive triumphs as a draftsman, first in the Netherlands and later in France, highlighting the diversity of his technical invention and the striking continuity of his vision. Given the pivotal role drawings played in Van Gogh’s artistic conception and the rich dialectic they enjoyed with his oil paintings, a small selection of related canvases by the artist is ... featured.

Painted in the last period of his life, Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night and Starlight Over the Rhone create tremendous emotional impact. Some believe Starlight Over the Rhone is the first of the series of 'Stars' painted by Vincent with Starry Night being painted the following year. In both paintings, the heavens are alive with the vibrancy of the stars contrasted by the dark blues of the sky.

After having failed as an art dealer and a Protestant evangelist, Van Gogh decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. He received a smattering of formal education, but mostly, with singular feverishness and dedication, studied and practiced on his own. In his 33rd year he moved to Paris, blossoming into a brilliant colorist. Two years later he moved south to Arles, producing bold, bright paintings and drawings at a miraculous rate. He started suffering bouts of insanity. He moved north to Auvers, near Paris, continuing to paint wonderfully.
