Vincent Van Gogh: Painters
built 286 days ago
Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter. Van Gogh's works are perhaps better known generally than those of any other painter. The great majority were produced in 29 months of frenzied activity interspersed with epiletic seizures and despair that finally ended in suicide.

Vincent meets Clasina Maria Hoornik (known as Sien) and they move in together. Sien is a prostitute with a five year old daughter and is pregnant with another child. While continuing his studies and painting with some acquaintances (painters Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and George Hendrik Breitner), Vincent's physical state again deteriorates and he is hospitalized for three weeks for gonorrhoea. Upon his release Vincent begins to experiment with oils and spends much time painting nature as well as using Sien and her newborn child as models.

Generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, van Gogh's striking and exuberant paintings were all produced during a period of ten years. His Post Impressionist work hauntingly conveys through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually led to his suicide(new evidence seems to dispute that fact).

Many painters responded to Van Gogh's use of vivid forms and colors but seemed unaware of the poetic content of his images. Displays of his work in Paris in 1901 and 1905 and in Cologne in 1912 were especially influential.
