Vincent Van Gogh: Artists
built 656 days ago
Van Gogh's painting style has led to his connection with several later art forms. His work is considered the forerunner of Expressionism because he made a conscious break with the convention of proportion for the sake of expressing character. His use of color for representing mood and atmosphere are seen as a link to Symbolism. Fauvist artists derived elements of their intense palettes from Van Gogh.
On 23 December 1889, a year to the day after the ear slashing incident, Vincent suffered another attack: an "aberration" as he called it (Letter 620). The attack was serious and lasted about a week, but Vincent recovered reasonably quickly and resumed painting--this time mainly copies of other artists' works, due to being confined inside, both because of his mental health and ... because of the weather. Sadly, Van Gogh suffered more attacks throughout the early months of 1890. These attacks came more frequently and left Vincent more incapacitated than any of those previously. Ironically, during this time when Van Gogh was probably at his lowest and most mentally despondent state, his works were finally beginning to receive critical acclaim. News of this, however, only served to depress Vincent further and renewed his hopes to leave the asylum and return to the north.
Van Gogh did countless studies for The Potato Eaters. The studies included heads, interiors, compositional sketches, and details of hands or the coffee pot. And when he was finally done with his monumental work, van Gogh signed it: "Vincent." If he was ever to make a career as an artist it would be as the painter of that picture alone.
In 1881, Van Gogh made the decision to undertake the study of art. Of this decision, one biographer writes, “With surprising speed, the clumsy but enthusiastic apprentice develops a strong artistic personality with his color effects and simple but unforgettable compositions” (Expo-VanGogh.com). His early work focused on peasant life and was predominantly dark in coloring. His later move to southern France brought in nature and landscapes in which his use of vivid colors is renowned.
Despite emotional setbacks with Kee and personal tensions with his father, Vincent found some encouragement from Anton Mauve (1838-88), his cousin by marriage. Mauve had established himself as a successful artist, and from his home in The Hague, supplied Vincent with his first set of watercolours--... giving Vincent his initial introduction to working in colours. Vincent was a great admirer of Mauve's works and was deeply grateful for any instruction that Mauve was able to provide. Their relationship was a pleasant one, but would suffer due to tensions brought about when Vincent began living with a prostitute.
Vincent van Gogh Biography Van Gogh's style was very expressive and later influenced many Expressionist artists. Vincent's Life story is just as famous as his art. He produced landscapes, portraits, interiors, still lifes and cityscapes. Still lifes included everyday objects ; shoes, potatoes, a chair, books, etc.
