Born Mark Vincent, Vin Diesel adopted a new name and set out at an early age to make an impact through acting. Vin got his first big break from filmmaker Steven Spielberg who saw one of Vin's short films and cast him in "Saving Private Ryan."

Diesel got his start in theater as a delinquent. When he was seven, he and some friends broke into an old theater and vandalized it. A woman from the theater caught them and told them they were welcome to play there--and handed them scripts. Later, he worked at several Manhattan nightclubs as a bouncer. He studied theater at the Theater for the New City and studied English at Hunter College.

Tras regresar a Nueva York, Diesel recibió una llamada de su agente. Steven Spielberg estaba interesado en conocerle tras ver su película "Multi-Facial". Tras encontrase con Spielberg, Diesel acabó comprometido en el nuevo proyecto del productor y director americano Salvar al soldado Ryan. El papel que interpretaría fue escrito para él, soldado Adrian Caparzo. Aunque era un papel pequeño, la experiencia fue importante tanto por ser el inicio de su salto a la fama como por pemitirle trabajar por primera vez en una producción profesional.
