The son of a Finnish taxi driver and his Hungarian wife, Ville Valo was born in a small, wood-house suburb of Helsinki called Vallila. Soon after his birth his family moved to the riverside community of Oulunkylä, where his father eventually opened a porn shop; during his late teens Ville spent a period working in the shop before launching his career in music. As a child he was influenced by his music-loving parents, who exposed him to the songs of popular Finnish performers such as Tapio Rautavaara and Rauli Badding Somerjoki, while an older cousin introduced him to the heavier sounds of bands like Kiss, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. His interests gradually expanded to include reggae, early blues and country-oriented material such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Neil Young. From a young age, Valo's enthusiasm for music ... took a more active form of expression, and he participated in a large number of different Helsinki-based bands: B.L.O.O.D. (1986-89), Eloveena Boys (1987-88), Kemoterapia (1989-97) and numerous other, more obscure projects.

Singing songwriter Ville Valo is the deadly Finn behind the formation of His Infernal Majesty, a Scandinavian goth ensemble responsible for reinvigorating a macabre genre of anthem-driven rock. Soon after their 1995 inception, the band abbreviated its name to HIM, but there has been no scrimping on the Valo charisma. It takes a special charm to keep a death-obsessed subculture alive for almost a decade and a half.

Ville Valo has a soft exterior and tends to relate very personally and sympathetically to other people. However, Ville sometimes lets his emotions overpower his reasoning and logic, and consequently he is sometimes biased in his opinions. Ville Valo is impressionable and rather gentle, or at least that is the way he appears. His feelings are on the surface and Ville cannot hide his emotions.
HIM frontman Ville Valo seems totally at home sitting poolside at his hotel in L.A. Sipping tea between cigarettes, the lead singer of the first Finnish band ever to go gold in the U.S. is happy to be back in L.A. after spending months at home recording the band’s follow up to 2005’s Dark Light, the aforementioned gold record. Then again, if the quintet hadn’t been at home during the dark, cold winter months they might not have recorded the aptly named Venus Doom, an album that Valo describes as being “Like a trip into my personal hell to a certain extent.â€

Open and generous, Ville Valo enjoys a wide circle of friends and acquaintances and he thrives on sociability and fellowship. He is adventurous, playful, freedom loving, and always ready for a good time. Valo rarely allows obstacles or difficulties to keep him down, for no matter how bleak the past or present, Ville always expects a better, brighter future. In fact, he is uncomfortable with his own or other people's problems and emotional pain. Ville Valo often tries to "cheer up" or offer philosophical advice to those who are hurting, but he unwittingly avoids or ignores the emotions involved.
