Viggo Mortensen has much to be proud of. Not only has he climbed to the top of the Hollywood heap, he's had a variety of accomplishments, including starting his own publishing house, exhibiting his photographs, and recording a number of jazz CDs. He's even entitled to a degree from the university of hard knocks, having worked a variety of jobs, from truck driver to waiter, in his youth.

In Alatriste, Viggo Mortensen plays a 17th-century soldier-turned-mercenary Captian Diego Alatriste. Bob Anderson who choreographed many of the fight scenes called the sword work unique and accurate to the time period. The Spanish film received 15 nominations for the 21st Goya Awards, including a nomination for Best Lead Actor for Mortenson’s performance as the Captain.

Since his debut as Alexander Godunov's brother in 1985's Witness, Viggo Mortensen's career has been marked by several standout performances. Feeling that his best chance lay in Los Angeles, Viggo now took off for California. Working as a truck driver, waiter and bartender to keep himself going, slowly things began to happen. His first real recognition came when he won a Dramalogue Critics Award for his performances as a sadistic Nazi in Bent at the Coast Playhouse. This involved questions of love and betrayal amongst homosexuals in Dachau and, coincidentally, the lead role of Max had been originated by Ian McKellen, later to join Viggo in The Lord Of The Rings.
