Mortensen is a part-time musician, a published poet, and a photographer and painter who has had exhibitions at art galleries such as the Robert Mann Gallery, Track 16 Gallery, Fototeca de Cuba, and Museet for Fotokunst in Denmark. On top of all that, he founded the independent publishing house Perceval Press.

A cynic might dismiss the poetry and photography as a "portrait of the film star as an artiste" bid, but Mortensen is no lightweight in the other creative worlds he inhabits. His work has been exhibited in galleries in the US, Cuba and Denmark, and he has published several books, some through his own company, Perceval Press.

Santa Monica, 13 December, 2001-Track 16 Gallery is pleased to present "Viggo Mortensen: Signlanguage," an exhibition of recent paintings and photographs, and "Alan Rath: Stereo," a show of eight handmade stereos by the Oakland-based artist. The exhibitions will open with a reception for the artists on Saturday, February 2, from 6 to 8 PM at Track 16 Gallery at Bergamot Station, and will run through March 30.
