Viewtiful Joe

Viewtiful Joe is a super hero with all the confidence, punch and style of a million-dollar action-hero caught in the world of a Hollywood movie. It begins as Joe and his girlfriend, Sylvia, are at the movies watching his favorite superhero, Captain Blue. Somehow, Sylvia is warped into the motion picture realm and it is up to Joe to fight the on-screen crime and rescue her. In the effort of saving his damsel in distress, Joe becomes more than just any ordinary dude. He gains new powers to perform special visual techniques that can be utilized to affect time and initiate a variety of devastating combos on foes. Joes special powers can ... be used to solve various inventive puzzles.

As a 2D game, Viewtiful Joe is very much old-school in design. In essence, the game is split into 7 ‘Episodes’ where you have a few stages in each, followed by a boss battle. Like many older ‘beat ‘em ups’ like Streets of Rage, you’re dropped into a level, and suddenly there’s a ton of enemies to beat the crap out of; some in simpler ways, others requiring some mad skillz in order to topple. At its heart, it’s not terribly original or anything in terms of gameplay, as it’s your prototypical side-scrolling fighter with some occasionally head-scratching puzzles taking up the bulk of the action, broken off by occasional mid-level boss battles that don’t compare to the main bosses. However, adding in the VFX stuff totally changes VJ. Once you earn the VFX Watch, Joe can bend time and use it to his advantage.

Despite being a single-player game that can be completed in approximately 15 hours, Viewtiful Joe has an exceptionally long lifespan. At the risk of saying too much, upon initial completion of the game the ending sets you up with multiple compelling reasons to go through again (a word of warning though: playing on the Kids difficulty will gain you nothing). And then once you beat it again, you are presented with more compelling reasons. And by compelling reasons, I’m not referring to the unlocking of some artwork, cheats or things of the nature, but bonuses that actually effect the way the game is played at a very fundamental level. Add this to the fact that Viewtiful Joe is so incredibly fun to play and you could easily find yourself logging in more than 50 or 60 hours before totally “completing” the game.

For the people who love getting every last ounce of material out of a game, Viewtiful Joe has quite a bit to keep you occupied. Besides the option to unlock new difficulties, such as the V-rated and Ultra V-rated modes, you will have the chance to play as characters other than Joe. That list includes the likes of Alastor, Captain Blue, and of course, Joe’s sweetheart Sylvia.

The special moves in Viewtiful Joe are superb. As the game is set within a movie, your powers are based upon movie related techniques. The first move acquired is the 'Slow Viewtiful 'which is basically like 'Bullet Time'. The most obvious advantage of this is that you will have more time to react to things, so you can dodge enemy attacks easier and have more time to perform your own attacks. Also, combos and juggles are easier to execute, your attacks are stronger and on top of that, multiple attacks against multiple enemies can be chained together for larger point scores and greater rewards. Slow ... allows you to dodge bullets and even strike them to return to, and damage, your attacker.

Based on the award-winning CapCom video game of the same name, Viewtiful Joe rapidly rose to the rank of Japan's most popular half hour cartoon show within weeks after its debut on October 2, 2004. A typically heady anime combination of laughs and thrills, the series focused on an average Joe named--well, Joe. Next to his girlfriend Silvia, Joe loved and adored his favorite action-movie hero, Captain Blue, and never missed the opportunity to watch his idol in action on the silver screen. While attending a showing of Captain Blue's latest picture with Joe, Silvia was suddenly sucked into the film and abducted by a fierce celluloid monster. Naturally, Joe followed Silvia via the same route, whereupon he met Captain Blue face to face. On the verge of retirement, the Captain bestowed his awesome powers on Joe, who, transformed into "Viewtiful Joe", carried on the battle against the baddies of Movie Land, notably the dreaded Jadows.
