Viewtiful Joe is about, well, a guy named Joe. Joe likes movies. Joe likes his girlfriend, Silvia and Joe likes a superhero named Captain Blue. Long story short, the bad guys jump out of the movie screen, kidnap Silvia and Joe's adventure begins. Like any classic style beat 'em up, story is pretty much nill while the action is high.

The Viewtiful Joe videogames owe their heritage to movies like The Purple Rose of Cairo, Pleasantville, and yes, even The Last Action Hero. The titles tell the story of an ordinary Joe, so to speak, whose girlfriend Sylvia is kidnapped as the two of them watch a martial arts movie in an otherwise deserted theatre. The catch is that the movie itself is the kidnapper. It's an old-school action flick starring a well-known movie hero, Captain Blue, who - though aging - is Joe's idol. The film's villains reach through the movie screen and pull Sylvia into their fight-filled universe. As a last ditch effort, Captain Blue calls upon Joe to don a special V-watch, which enables him to transform into a young and powerful superhero known as Viewtiful Joe.

The story in Viewtiful Joe is B-rate sci-fi through and through, but it works pretty well here. Joe is a normal guy watching one of his favorite Japanese-style superhero films starring his hero Captain Blue with his girlfriend Silvia. Suddenly, one of the bad guys from the movies jumps out of the screen and takes Silvia with him back into the movie world. Joe chases them into the screen and enters movie land, and with the help of Captain Blue, becomes a superhero that not only has to save his girlfriend, but Movie Land too.
