The Vietnam War (1954–75) was a war like no other in American history. It was America's longest war: military advisors were in the country from 1954 until 1975, and actual combat troops were in the country from 1965 to 1975.

The Vietnam War pitted America against communism and was a classic example of Cold War conflict. The western allies had been victorious in Berlin, but communism had taken root in China. Eastern Europe remained under Russian control and in Vietnam the American feared threat of the spread communism seemed to be real.

Twenty five years have passed since the end of the Vietnam war. During that time Americans and the world learned more about the history of the conflict and why it all began in the first place. Many agree that the Anti-war movement had significant impact on the length and perhaps even the outcome of the Vietnam war. Others might disagree saying that the massive protests were part of an eroding and troubled society. One thing is certain ... -- the Anti-war movement left an everlasting mark on an entire generation and its country.

If Vietnam vets loathe him, World War Two vets seem to think he's a buffoon. Short of reversing over the last 128-year-old Spanish-American War veteran in the retirement home parking lot, it's hard to see how Kerry could more comprehensively diminish his military support.

The Ford administration saw the withdrawal of American forces from the Vietnam War, the execution of the Helsinki Accords amid the Cold War and the continuing specter of inflation and recession. Ford came under intense criticism for granting a preemptive pardon to President Richard Nixon for his role in the Watergate scandal, and was subsequently defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election. However, this act would later come to be seen in a different light. For his pardon of Nixon, Caroline Kennedy and her uncle, former pardon critic Senator Ted Kennedy, awarded the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage award to Ford.
