Sergeant E-5 Robert L. Daumiller is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Daumiller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 31 January 1968, while serving as a door gunner of an armed helicopter during a rescue mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. While his aircraft was providing escort for a medical evacuation helicopter, Sergeant Daumiller exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he placed effective suppressive fire on the enemy emplacements. His action enabled the medical evacuation helicopter to make several landings and extract the injured personnel. Sergeant Daumiller's display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
The Huey 65-10091 was manufactured by Bell Helicopter in 1965 for the U.S. Army and deployed to Vietnam in 1966. It served with the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company, known as "The Robin Hoods," and was shot down on January 7, 1967. After being repaired in the United States, it returned to service until 1995 when it was acquired by the Texas Air Command Museum in Fort Worth for use in educational programming.

The president even dared to risk making comparisons to Vietnam – not about “quagmires” but about how tragedy followed America’s retreat. While liberal politicians and media elites insisted that life would be better for the Vietnamese after America left, President Bush noted that former allies of the United States, intellectuals and businessmen “were sent off to prison camps, where tens of thousands perished.”
