Deliberately setting aside the controversies of the war, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial honors the men and women who served when their Nation called upon them. The designer, Maya Lin, felt that “the politics had eclipsed the veterans, their service and their lives.” She kept the design elegantly simple to “allow everyone to respond and remember.”

For the past 17 years, Sons and Daughters In Touch (http://www.sdit.org/) has worked to locate, unite and provide support to the now-grown children of American servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War. In that time, more than 3,000 members have contacted veterans who served with their fathers, visited the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and shared their life experiences with others. Today, SDIT members take considerable pride in knowing that the loss of their father was not in vain.

Echoes From The Mall is a field trip guide intended to help teachers interpret the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for their students. A wide variety of suggested on-site and classroom activities offers educators a framework for exploring all elements of the Memorial.
