In 1993, Tacoma became the first city in the country to install a CCTV video surveillance system to address neighborhood crime in residential rather than commercial business districts. This unique approach to fighting residential crime was initiated by the neighborhood residents. "Before the cameras were put in, there were drug dealers selling drugs and prostitutes hooking anywhere they can hide; behind tresses, bushes, even under the steps of buildings," said one resident. According to a member of the Hilltop Action Coalition, an ethnically diverse community, residents organized a series of meetings with the police department and city officials and jointly decided that a video surveillance system should be pursued. The city promptly applied for and received a federal grant of $125,000 to install 3 pantilt\zoom cameras on neighborhood light poles.

CW Communications Inc., a video surveillance network installation company and subsidiary of China Wireless Communications, has just completed the installation of a video surveillance network for the Scofield Memorial Church and School in Dallas, Texas. This new system allows security employees to monitor the premises in real time and provide video back up for review. Cameras were installed throughout the church and school, enhancing the ability to monitor activities throughout the campus as well as all entrances and parking areas. The system provides Scofield Memorial Church with a higher level of security and comfort for its congregation, parents and students. The cameras installed in the sanctuary allow offsite viewing of worship services via internet by congregation members unable to attend them in person.

As of January 2007, public video surveillance in Canada is fairly limited. The City of London currently has sixteen cameras operating in the downtown area. The City of Montreal ... has been conducting pilot studies with systems in their downtown. Individual public surveillance cameras have been set up in Kelowna and Baie-Comeau, and temporary video surveillance is used in Edmonton for the monitoring of special events such as Canada Day. The Toronto Police have also recently started a pilot project with fifteen redeployable cameras.
