Video cameras have become one of the most valuable tools in the plumbing business. Specially made fiber optic cameras allow for a visual inspection of underground sewer lines and other piping to determine the condition of the inside of the pipe. A flexible rod with a high-resolution video camera on its tip is inserted into the pipe for inspection. Video images are transmitted to the camera operator and can be saved onto a videotape for a permanent record. Radio transmitters on the camera record the depth and physical location from the surface so that defects and obstructions can be corrected cost effectively.

Sony says that their new entry-level HVR HD-1000U video camera brings professional high definition moviemaking for "wedding videographers, freelancers and educational video creators." So why is this camera good for filming high-def porn? For one, the shoulder-mount design will tighten those pans, as will the Super SteadyShot optical image stabilizer. Not to mention the Smooth Slow Rec, for 240 fields per second slow-motion shots.

How much a smaller can a video camera get? Apparently, tinier than a ladybug. Sharp introduced the LZ0P396D, a CCD camera module destined for mobile phones that will be used as a secondary camera capable of 30fps video. The company plans to start mass producing them in April, and each module will be $10. Beyond that, what a great marketing concept to picture the little sucker next to a ladybug. Neat stuff.

Video cameras are used primarily in two modes. The first, characteristic of much early television, is what might be called a live broadcast, where the camera feeds real time images directly to a screen for immediate observation; in addition to live television production, such usage is characteristic of security, military/tactical, and industrial operations where surreptitious or remote viewing is required. The second is to have the images recorded to a storage device for archiving or further processing; videotape is traditional for this purpose, but optical disc media, hard disk, and flash memory are all used as well.
