Film and video camera operators operate motion picture and video cameras and related equipment to record news, live events, films, videos and television broadcasts. They are employed by television networks and stations, motion picture and video production companies and in-house communications facilities of large corporations.

People in the film and video photography field don't agree on the best way to prepare for it. Some camera operators have a bachelor's degree from film school and believe that it has been the basis of their success. Others argue that unless you can go to one of the top schools (like the University of California at Los Angeles or New York University) and have a great deal of behind-the-camera experience while you’re there, you would do just as well to get a degree in some other subject.
Professional video cameras, such as those used in television and sometimes film production; these may be studio-based or mobile. Such cameras generally offer extremely fine-grained manual control for the camera operator, often to the exclusion of automated operation.
