The Victorian era is ... known for its fascination with death. Elaborate rituals surrounded the everyday occurrences of dying and grieving, and it was in this environment that tear bottles re-surfaced as a popular icon of grief and grieving. An interesting summary of Victorian mourning practices by Anne Douglas and a list of additional references can be found at PageWise.
Queen Victoria (shown here on the morning of her ascension to the Throne, 20 June 1837) gave her name to the historic era Brass bands and 'The bandstand' became popular in the Victorian era typically associated with the British brass band. The band stand is a simple construction which not only creates an ornamental focal point, it ... serves acoustic requirements whilst providing shelter from the changeable British weather. It was common to hear the sound of a brass band whilst strolling through parklands. At this time musical recording was still very much a novelty.
The Victorian era is known as the "Age of Progress" because it was a Era of great Scientific and Mechanical developments. The Victorian era was a time of great change. Huge ships were built, the first aeroplanes were built, the first steel bridges, great machinery for factories, the telegraph line started and many other developments: 1846 The first sewing machine was in use, making stitching of garments much easier. 1870 The first typewriters appeared. 1875 Bell makes the first telephone call. 1884 France presented U.S.A. with the Statue of Liberty, which now stands in New York's harbour.
These fanciful Victorian houses are lavished with Eastlake style spindlework. A Victorian is a house constructed during the Victorian era, approximately 1840 to 1900. During the Victorian era, industrialization brought new building materials and techniques. Architecture saw rapid changes. A variety of Victorian styles emerged, each with its own distinctive features.
It was ... during the Victorian Era that archeology began to take on a new fervor. An interesting view of "contemporary" perspectives can be found in "The Explorations of Di Cesnola in Cyprus", by Hiram Hitchcock. Published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in July 1872. What makes the article so interesting today is the "oneness of the race in all ages." That is, the discovery that each human civilization developed with more commonality than difference. In the record of this discovery is "a white lachrymatory with very delicate incrustation; and a curious one with a long neck." Like many excavations over time, a tear bottle, or sometime ascribed to be one, was part of the find. The Cornell Library collection contains an original manuscript of this interesting article (see page 197 for the lachrymatory reference).
