Unlike the other people who were there to read from the many works of Kerouac, Wong was barely tall enough to peer out over the top of the podium on the stage. Unkempt and disheveled, he could have been a Chinese pirate or a wizened Zen master. His stringy long hair was held back by a black headband. His goatee was emblazoned with gray hairs. As a scientist, Wong needs to know more than just the general shape of an image. He needs to explore minute fluctuations and discern the numerical values of the pixels so that he can create mathematical models that match the image. "Color is an extra dimension," explains Wong.
Challenging dominant racist notions of the limited range of subjects appropriate for an Asian-American artist, Wong focused primarily upon Latino and African-American subjects throughout the 1980s. In the following decade, he turned his attention to his Chinese-American heritage, creating bold paintings that combined childhood memories with spectacular Hollywood versions of Asian culture.
