Victor Borge: Piano
built 170 days ago
The son of a violinist in the Danish Symphony Orchestra, Victor Borge became a child prodigy soon after he began playing the piano at the age of three. “A child prodigy” means____________.

Victor Borge plays the piano, and in fact is quite an accomplished musician, having performed in the past as a concert pianist. On this occasion... Mr. Borge took his knowledge of the keyboard and applied it to his knowledge of the funny-bone, and brought the crowd to a roaring ovation. He performed charming improvisational compositions, which were constantly interrupted by slapstick antics, such as falling off the piano bench and having his left hand wander off - while his right hand worked full pace at a challenging composition of an entirely different nature - in order to play a silly rendition of "Happy Birthday." At times Mr. Borge seemed half his age as he dashed about the stage during his slapstick routines, and one almost forgot that he wasn't. n

Borge used physical and visual elements in his live and televised performances. He would play a strange-sounding piano tune from sheet music, looking increasingly confused; turning the sheet upside down, he would then play the actual tune, flashing a joyful smile of accomplishment to the audience (he had, at first, been literally playing the actual tune upside down). When his energetic playing of another song would cause him to fall off the piano bench, he would open the seat lid, take out the two ends of an automotive seatbelt, and buckle himself onto the bench, "for safety". His musical sidekick in the 1950s, Leonid Hambro, was a well-known concert pianist.
