The International Review of Victimology is the leading international peer-reviewed journal for victimological research. Areas covered include traditional areas of victimological research, such as the victim-offender relationship, victimisation surveys, victim compensation, the victim in the criminal justice system, reparation and restitution by offenders, crime prevention for victims and restorative justice, together with broader theoretical issues such as definitions of victimisation and the philosophy of victimology. This in turn opens the door to the consideration of political and human rights issues, including victims of war crimes, and contributions from a comparative perspective are especially welcome.

This book contains an edited selection of papers presented at the 8th International Symposium on Victimology. The nexus between theoretical and practical victimology and its relationship to criminology is an important theme within the papers. Matters affecting victims, such as victim impact statements and compensation, victimisation in families, gender bias in the legal system, victims of war in Bosnia, and victims of human rights in South Africa are all debated, as are issues related to power, politics and victimisation; victim surveys and methodology; and victim services.
