Vic Reeves: Bob Mortimer
built 271 days ago
Vic Reeves has threatened to leave the BBC. According to reports Vic and his sidekick Bob Mortimer are sick of having their wacky ideas poo-pooed by safe old Auntie Beeb. Vic has told press that their decision to overlook the duos suggestion for a Friday night show is the final straw and that they are now looking at new projects, among them Monkey Trousers, for ITV and a history project for the Discovery Channel.

Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer display their own inimitable brand of anarchic and surreal comedy in a set containing both series of THE SMELL OF REEVES AND MORTIMER. Having switched from Channel 4 to the BBC in 1993, the duo introduced a host of new characters for their loyal fan base.

Jim Moir, alias Vic Reeves, came up through the comedy circuit, picking up fellow-traveller Bob Mortimer along the way. Since their surreal stage show Big Night Out tranferred to Channel 4 in 1990, Vic and Bob have gone from strength to strength, with a string of hit sketch shows and semi-spoof game shows, and even an entertaining kitschy revival of 60s private eye romp Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). Jim ... had a number one hit and released a very silly album, and has won plaudits for his paintings too.

Played by Vic and Bob, the Stotts are redundant, jittery, bickering Northern brothers with masking tape moustaches, poorly applied bald-wigs, big silly clown shoes and high-pitched voices. For reasons best kept to himself, Davey (Vic) wears a kilt. Donald (Bob) is the slightly more sensible one in a grey leather jacket, but he is prone to "antique incidents." The pair are ... frequently startled. They have many talents including presenting talk shows (interviewing each other), game shows (including party games such as "Pass the Fat," Read the Anthony Trollope Novel" and "Guess What's On Les's Back") and doing magic shows. Usually however, they just give up and leave the set before their spot is supposed to finish.

Reeves is one of the few comedians to have had a number one hit in the UK chart, which he did in company with The Wonder Stuff , singing Dizzy (previously a number one hit for Tommy Roe ). The single's B-side was the original composition Oh! Mr. Hairdresser , recorded with The Images of Cream and supposedly featuring Bob Mortimer on the mandolin . He ... released a version of Born Free which was critically acclaimed and also reached the top ten. A third single during the same period, Abide With Me , had little success, although a later team-up with EMF , covering The Monkees hit I'm a Believer was somewhat more successful.
