Discovered and developed by Pfizer, Viagra is the first in a new class of medications known as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors that improve blood flow to the penis. In clinical trials, Viagra has been demonstrated to restore sexual function in most patients.

Pfizer, which makes Viagra, has accused the government of breaching one of the NHS's principles, that medical treatment should be available to patients on the basis of clinical need. The company says that the conditions specified by Mr Dobson represent about 15% of those who could benefit clinically from Viagra and that the minister has discriminated against patients with heart and psychological problems (see pp273, 284, 338).

Viagra is available in 3 dosages – 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. Usually a patient will be prescribed the 50mg dosage, with the option of this being increased to 100mg if the results experienced are found to be less than hoped for with no adverse effects.
