CBS Television executive vp Martin Franks and EchoStar senior vp and general counsel David Moskowitz attempted to calm lawmakers' fears that the EchoStar's blackout of Viacom programming would be a long one. Their talk was markedly calmer than the sniping that has characterized public comments about the carriage spat.
Viacom's forays into the production of original programming in the late 1970s and early 1980s had mixed results. Competition was stiff, the odds of producing a successful television series or film were long, and Viacom experienced several failures. The Lazarus Syndrome and Dear Detective series were failures, and CBS canceled Nurse after 14 episodes.

Viacom and CBS, alteration of existing Executive offices areas were required. This effort was prepared during executive's transitions and construction during weekends for minimal disruption. The original space was directed by Dennis Belfiore while at HOK. These included Executive Offices, Multi Media, and Telecomm Center. The image of the executive offices needed to be sensitive to both Wall Street and Entertainment communities. Emphasis was placed on state of the art technological capabilities within the context of attractive, yet economical space.

In November 2004 Viacom agreed to pay $3.5 million in fines to settle several cases of radio and television indecency with the FCC. In addition to the 2004 Super Bowl halftime breast-baring by Janet Jackson, another case involved the language of the corporation's "shock jock" Howard Stern. A third stemmed from a program by then-Viacom radio personalities Opie and Anthony, who gave graphic details of what they claimed was a couple having sex inside Manhattan's St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Viacom shares closed up last Friday, rising $0.34 to $32.76. Shares of the new Viacom were unchanged at $40 last Friday, while shares of CBS climbed $0.50 to $25.50. The markets were closed Monday.

Later that year, Viacom added WHNB-TV in New Britain, Connecticut, changing its call letters to WVIT. The early 1980s saw Viacom sorting through the Sonderling stations with several being donated, swapped, or being the nucleus for new corporations -- for example, WOL in Washington launched the Radio One group, which today is the largest African-American-owned broadcasting corporation.
