The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications and one of the largest corporate foundations in the world, last year donated approximately $10.4 million to nonprofit groups in New York state. Nationwide, the foundation awarded approximately $67.4 million to worthy causes and charities last year.

Verizon Verizon New Jersey partners with NJ SHARES for Communications Lifeline outreach and enrollment efforts. NJ SHARES is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)(3)corporation organized to provide assistance to individuals and families living in New Jersey who are in need of temporary help in paying their communications and energy bills. Through NJ SHARES more New Jerseyans in need of this critical telecommunications safety net are aware of and able to benefit from Communications Lifeline.

In the meantime, Verizon has sought changes at the state level. California, Indiana, Kansas, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia have passed legislation to allow statewide franchising. Similar bills have been introduced in Florida, Michigan and Missouri. Since Verizon launched fiber-optic TV services in Keller, Texas, in September 2005, it has accumulated more than 130 franchises, covering more than 3 million households in nine states.
In 2007, the Verizon Foundation provided nearly $144,000 in direct grants to 17 nonprofit groups in Wisconsin. Grants included $50,000 to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to expand Thinkfinity.org educational resources in the state; $13,500 to Wisconsin Literacy Inc. to recruit and train new tutors; and $10,000 to Advocates of Ozaukee to expand domestic violence prevention resources.
