built 656 days ago
Starting in summer 2006, in an exclusive arrangement with Verizon Wireless, users will be able to download the application from the Verizon Wireless Get It Now suite of services onto applicable handsets. Verizon Wireless and TiVo will ... collaborate on a joint marketing campaign to promote availability of the new TiVo Mobile feature.
Verizon added a net of 309,000 broadband DSL lines in the third quarter 2004 for a total of 3.3 million DSL lines in service, representing 1.1 million net additions over the past year. The company ... began rolling out FiOS fiber-optic-based services in the third quarter 2004.
By out-tasking support of these inherently complex devices to Verizon Business, enterprises can control deployment and operational costs while strengthening their overall security. Outsourcing to Verizon Business ... helps to decrease the need for resource-intensive in-house expertise. It can be difficult for businesses to supply such expertise for all the security functions that touch UTM, such as firewall, virtual private networking and intrusion protection services.
More trouble came for Verizon at the end of the year when it pulled out of a merger with NorthPoint, a DSL business. The $800 million deal was to commence at the start of 2001 but Verizon discontinued it at the last minute, citing NorthPoint's weakening financial position. Verizon had hoped to expand its out-of-region service and compete with cable companies for Internet service. In December NorthPoint sued Verizon for $1 billion in damages. At the time of this writing the case was scheduled to proceed in a San Francisco court.
Overall, Verizon's growth businesses -- wireless, long-distance, broadband, data and Enterprise services -- accounted for 55 percent of third-quarter 2004 revenues. This compares with 49 percent of third-quarter 2003 revenues. Over the past year, revenues from these businesses have grown by 20.8 percent.
Verizon provides several different types of land line services -- standard service as well as Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, and optical fiber line services. Verizon ... offers long-distance services and a joint venture with Microsoft that combines VoIP and Windows Live Messenger. Verizon provides DSL service in many regions in which it offers phone service, and recently launched FTTP (fiber to the premises) service to some subscribers which it has branded "FiOS Internet".
