Verizon's marketing drive coincides with the decision by US IPTV provider Interactive Television Networks (ITVN) to give away 5,000 set-top boxes as part of a marketing promotion. Included in the giveaway deal is a 15-day free subscription to XTV Networks, ITVN's adult channel.

AT&T attorney David Carpenter called the rates proposed by Verizon and other incumbent companies "irrational" and "bloated." He said nothing in the Telecommunications Act directs the FCC to compensate existing local phone service providers for building the original networks.

In an interesting NY Times article, Verizon says it must quickly build its fiber network to fend off rivals such as Comcast and Vonage, which offer inexpensive voice alternatives. With cable companies and single-play VoIP providers (Vonage, Packet8, Lingo, etc.)...
