Verizon Communications Inc. on Tuesday denied media reports that it entered into a contract with the National Security Agency to hand over information about customer phone calls. Last week, USA Today reported the NSA was secretly collecting phone records from Verizon, BellSouth and AT&T. BellSouth issued its own denial Monday.
During the third quarter of 2007, from June through September, 202,000 new customers chose FiOS TV from Verizon; at the end of the quarter, Verizon had 717,000 FiOS TV customers in 12 states. The service was available for sale to 4.7 million premises, and penetration averaged 15.2 percent across all markets. Verizon FiOS TV currently offers the following HD national channels: TNT HD, ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, NFL Network HD, HD Net, HD Net Movies, Universal HD, HD Theater, Wealth TV HD, National Geographic Channel HD, MHD, Food Network HD, HGTV HD, Lifetime Movie Network HD and A&E HD. By 2010, Verizon estimates that the cost will drop to $700 per home and $650 per connection. But even assuming this best-case scenario, in which about 40 percent subscribe to its FiOS Internet or TV service, the cost per customer would average $2,400. It would still take about two years to recover costs from a customer who takes all three services: voice, video and broadband data. "Verizon is betting on getting money from someone else besides the end-users," says University of Southern California economist Simon Wilkie, the former chief economist at the FCC.

Verizon is the provider of a fiber-optic Internet and television service called FiOS. Verizon distributes Actiontec MI424WR wireless routers to FiOS customers. This router contains BusyBox, and under the terms of the GPL, Verizon is obligated to provide the source code of BusyBox to recipients of the device. According to the lawsuit, Verizon continues to distribute BusyBox illegally without source code, despite having been contacted by SFLC.
