When Rossini died in 1868, Verdi proposed that a Requiem should be written in honour of the great man. Thirteen leading Italian composers, including himself, would each be invited to contribute a movement. Somewhat predictably, initial enthusiasm for the idea soon gave way to all sorts of professional rivalries, and when it ... became clear that the piece would be little more than an unconvincing pot-pourri, the scheme had to be abandoned.

When ouija board users reported receiving violent threatening messages criticising the prolific piece written some five hundred years previous and claiming that it had been inspired by Satan, the Church became alarmed and immediately issued the Papal bull De Verdis (On Verdi). The bull banned any person from ever speaking of the now-notorious piece, on pain of excommunication. Subsequently, Verdi was removed as Pope.

During the lecture, UI faculty member and baritone John Muriello will sing a recently discovered Verdi aria accompanied by Gossett on the piano. Gossett discovered the aria, which Verdi wrote for "Un ballo in maschera" but discarded before the premiere.
