Verdi showed talent by the age of seven and even played organ at a local church. Around this time he was given an old piano, which he quickly learned to play with proficiency. He moved to Busseto in 1823 and began study the following year with Ferdinando Provesi. By age 15 he had become an assistant church organist and had already started composing. Beginning in 1832, he studied privately with Vincenzo Lavigna in Milan, after the Conservatory there turned him away.

Verdi had overcome other serious, life-altering experiences in the past. His first wife and two children had died in 1840, leaving only his daughter Filomena. He later decided to marry Giuseppina Strepponi, but only after many years of having her as his mistress. She was a well-known singer whose tempestuous personality made her unpopular with the public. When Verdi courageously forged ahead with the wedding, it cost him his relationship with his parents, his good name, and some financial security.
Verdi was raised in suburban New Jersey and got a taste for the finer things in life by watching his Portuguese mother, a skilled dressmaker, and noshing on culinary delights prepared by his father, a French chef. Quickly dismissing his parent's American dreams of becoming a Dr. or lawyer, Verdi instead did what every rebellious teen does - he began designing and making jewelry, spending his senior year in high school playing hooky and high-tailing it over the Hudson to sell baubles in the Manhattan streets and to downtown boutiques. It proved a lucrative business for this precocious entrepreneur. His persistence, a degree from New York's Fashion Institute of Technology, and a lot of talent lead to jewelry showcases in Manhattan's fabulous four Bs Barneys, Bendels, Bloomies and Bergdorf. Verdi sacrificed stringing jewels in the early 90's and redirected his pursuits towards a television career, beginning with a stint as a fashion reporter on Gay Entertainment Television.
Verdi's last opera, Falstaff, whose libretto was ... by Boito, was based on Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor and Victor Hugo's subsequent translation. It was an international success and is one of the supreme comic operas which shows Verdi's genius as a contrapuntist.
