Nathalie Dechy and Vera Zvonareva won the U.S. Open women's doubles title Sunday, beating Dinara Safina and Katarina Srebotnik 7-6 (5), 7-5. It's the first Grand Slam championship for both France's Dechy and Russia's Zvonareva, who were playing in only their fourth tournament together and second major. Russia's Safina and Slovenia's Srebotnik held three set points in the opener, leading 5-4 and love-40 on Zvonareva's serve. But Dechy-Zvonareva won the next five points.

Vera Zvonareva defeated Anna Chakvetadze in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to become the first player to reach the last eight of the DFS Classic. Zvonareva converted all four break points to set up a meeting with Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the quarter-finals. Schiavone, who has received coaching from Martina Navratilova this week, was another player forced to spend more time on court than she would have liked, requiring three sets to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Zvonareva started her season in Auckland, by beating Sacha Jones and Sofia Arvidsson before losing in the Quarter-Finals to wild card Marina Erakovic. Her next event was at Hobart where she defeated Olga Poutchkova and Olaru. She beat Elena Vesnina in the Quarter Finals 6-3 6-3 and Ashley Harkleroad in the semis 6-2 6-1. While warming up for the finals against Eleni Danillidou on January 11, she rolled her left ankle and was forced to forfeit the championship.

Zvonareva is 0-2 so far, having lost 6-2, 6-4 to Svetlana Kuznetsova on Wednesday night. For the second straight match, an emotional Zvonareva bounced her racket off the court, smacked balls in anger and tears streaked her face after the loss.

It was a disappointing end for Zvonareva who has been in impressive form. A disappointed Zvonareva fronted fans for a brief on-court interview to discuss her injury. Eleni Daniilidou was then announced as the 2008 Moorilla Hobart International champion in a walk over.
