In this new era of power players like the Williams sisters, Vera Zvonareva has proved that she can be a formidable contender against players that strike the ball hard. Zvonareva at the 2004 French Open Zvonareva has won five WTA Tour singles titles, four WTA Tour doubles titles and two ITF Women's Circuit singles titles. In her first few years on the pro tour, she became known for her fragile psyche, often breaking down in tears during matches. Critics cited her unstable emotions as a reason why her results may have fallen short of her expectations. Her first Slam quarterfinal came at the 2003 French Open, defeating Venus Williams in the fourth round. Of her five singles titles, two have been at the Cellular South Cup in Memphis, Tennessee.
At only 19 years of age, Zvonareva has built quite an impressive resume. In 2002, her first full year on Tour, she reached the quarterfinals at Bol, the semifinals at Warsaw and Sopot, the finals in Palermo, and the Round of 16 at Roland Garros, en route to a WTA Tour ranking of 45. Last year, she captured her career-first title at Bol and reached nine Tour quarterfinals, including the French Open. She was ... a semifinalist at Strasbourg, Vienna, and Linz, and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, vaulting into the top 10 and landing at No. 13.
Zvonareva will try for her sixth career WTA singles title on Friday and first since capturing the Cincinnati tournament in the summer of 2006. She reached just one final last year, losing to Jelena Jankovic in an Australian Open tuneup at Auckland.
