Earlier, Vera Zvonareva finally beat Amelie Mauresmo (4-6 6-3 6-4) contrary to most expectations – Zvonareva yielded at all seven previous meetings against the Frenchwoman. After losing the first four games in a row, Zvonareva caught the rhythm and staked on the changing tempo to show that dreadful Mauresmo was unready for abrupt style.

ZURICH: World number one Justine Henin eased into the quarter-finals of the Zurich Open on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Russia’s Vera Zvonareva. Chasing the ninth tournament of her impressive season, the Belgian was not at her dominant best as the match got underway – squandering three early break points in Zvonareva’s first two service games with a series of misplaced shots.

Zvonareva was born September 7, 1984 in Moscow, Russia to Igor Zvonarev and Natalia Zvonareva. She was introduced to tennis at the age of six by her mother, although no other members of her family play the game.

Tied at 4-all in the second set, Zvonareva won the last three games to take the match and continue her recent success at Amelia Island. She received a bye and won two matches in last year's Bausch & Lomb before losing to Justine Henin-Hardenne, then the world's top-ranked player, in the quarterfinals.

In the second set, Zvonareva was only able to hold her opening serve. At 2-1, Henin built up three break points but needed only one, taking the game with a cross-court forehand winner. She broke twice more to close out the match.
