The 2002 champion beat Michaella Krajicek 6-3, 6-4 at Roland Garros, after fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16 for the first time. The women's and men's top seeds, Belgium's Justine Henin and Roger Federer of Switzerland, both won in straight sets.
