When Venus Williams made her debut in professional women's tennis in 1994, the New York Times's Robin Finn called her "the most unorthodox tennis prodigy her sport has ever seen." The 2002 champion beat Michaella Krajicek 6-3, 6-4 at Roland Garros, after fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia defeated Venus Williams 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16 for the first time. The women's and men's top seeds, Belgium's Justine Henin and Roger Federer of Switzerland, both won in straight sets.

The second proved infinitely more entertaining as Justine Henin overcame her shortness of breath and Venus Williams her dizziness to stage a tense battle many saw as the de facto women’s final.
