Venus Williams Could be that Venus Williams is a stone-cold killer. But not of her baby sister. Just in her own way. John McEnroe babbles on about how he could beat the Williams sisters (Mac is delusional here -- you're closing in on 50, Mac, and Venus would run you into the ground; it wouldn't be a question of you winning -- it would be a question of you having a heart attack or a stroke -- and I mean in any competition with Venus), or how the top 100 or 200 men could beat Venus, yada-yada, not knowing that he is validating her by even making the stiff comparison.
Today, Venus Williams joined her sister as a spectator for the rest of the Australian Open. She lost to #4 seed Ana Ivanovic 7-6, 6-4 in straight sets. This was her first victory against Williams in five matches.
NEW YORK - When Venus Williams is healthy, she’s still one of the top players in women’s tennis. Like her sister, though, Williams has had plenty of problems with injuries, and the bum left wrist that’s sidelined her since Wimbledon is forcing her to skip the U.S. Open.

Upon their return in 2004, the Williams sisters failed to recapture their previous best, including Venus's controversial defeat in a second round loss to Croatian Karolina Sprem at Wimbledon. The referee of the match, Ted Watts, awarded Sprem an unearned point in the deciding tiebreak. Upon the conclusion of the match, he was quickly relieved of his duties.
WHEN Venus Williams won the coveted Lipton Invitational earlier this year, the tennis world reeled. Not since Althea Gibson won Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958 had a Sister caused such a stir within the White country club sport of tennis--and rarely has anyone, Black or White, become among the game's best in the cavalier way that Williams has.
