Venice: San Marco
built 655 days ago
Among the many Gothic churches of Venice the largest are the Franciscan church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Fran (1250-1280), and the Dominican church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo (1260-1400). The Frari is remarkable for its Got ' 'churchiches. fine choir-stalls and for the series of six eastern chapels which from outside give a very good example of Gothic brickwork, comparable with the even finer apse of the now desecrated church of San Gregorio. The church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo was the usual burying-place of the doges, and contains many noble mausoleums of various dates.

Venice is divided into six sections or sestieri. The Cannaregio is near the station. Also on the same side of the Grand Canal are San Marco and Castello. Santa Croce is across the Grand Canal from the train station and San Polo and the Dorsoduro are across the canal from St. Mark's.

While Venice has settled deeper into the mud over the last 100 years there’s no immediate danger of it sinking into the lagoon. However, winter often sees high tides (acqua alta) flooding low-lying areas like St Mark’s Square: sirens wail to warn you to don wellies before the water arrives. For information on Venice’s water situation visit Puntolaguna (campo Santo Stefano 2949, 041 529 3582, www.salve.it), a multimedia centre providing information on activities to safeguard Venice and its lagoon.

Both airports have bus connections with Venice (Piazzale Roma), Mestre, Padua and other towns. ATVO 'pullman'coaches (€9 return) run to and from Treviso to co-incide with flights. Marco Polo airport runs a shuttle bus --€3-- (or just turn left and walk 10 minutes under the awning) to the Alilaguna water-bus jetty, where €12 gets you a leisurely 80 minute boat trip to San Marco via Murano, Lido and the Arsenale. Or take the cheaper boat (€6) to Fondamente Nuove which takes only half an hour. Alternatively you can travel in style (and much faster) by hiring one of the speedy water-taxis (30 mins) for about €100.
