Vegeta is introduced in the series as an arrogant prince of the Saiyans, a fictional warrior race from the planet Vegeta. At his introduction, Vegeta can be seen to have a fierce desire for immortality and galactic rule; ... Vegeta's plans are quickly thwarted by the series' main protagonist named Son Goku, who is also Saiyan. Because of Vegeta's overwhelming pride and ego, being defeated by someone whom he had considered physically inferior drastically transforms his character into a jealous and vengeful anti-hero. By the end of the series, Vegeta's bitter rivalry with Goku softens when he comes to respect Goku as an ally and even a friend.As a member of the Saiyan race, Vegeta possesses a large number of transformations that enhance his abilities to varying degrees and alter his physical appearance. He has the ability to become an Oozaru, so long as he still has his tail, which increases his strength tenfold. He also eventually learns to become a Super Saiyan on several different levels (including Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 4), increasing his physical strengths and capabilities even further.

Vegeta is introduced to Dragon Ball Z aged twenty-nine (never confirmed in the anime, as his age is apparently never revealed in the animated form of the story) as a mercenary for Freeza. Vegeta comes to Earth when he receives Raditz's report of seven magic objects known as the Dragonballs which will grant wishes. After hearing this report, and of Raditz's defeat, Vegeta and his companion, Nappa, decide to come to Earth and use the Dragon Balls to wish for immortality. Goku and the Z Fighters are warned of their arrival, and begin to train themselves. Goku ... was on King Kai's planet training. When they landed on Earth, Nappa and Vegeta wreaked havoc with little to stop them.

Vegeta is not seen again until later in which he reluctantly fuses with Goku to become Vegetto. After Vegetto is absorbed by Super Buu, Vegeta assists Goku in rescuing everyone absorbed by Buu. Vegeta ... rips out the original Buu from Super Buu which causes Super Buu to revert back to Kid Buu, Buu's original form. Vegeta along with Goku, Mr. Satan and Dende are transported to the planet of the Kaioshin when the earth is destroyed by Kid Buu. Vegeta then helps Goku buy time to create a Genkai Dama, which would destroy Buu.

Vegeta decided to gamble that Namek had Dragon Balls as well, and raced to that planet to get a second chance at immortality. And on Namek, he faced an even worse defeat. He died against Frieza, who constantly mocked him the entire time, and even confessed to wiping the Saiyans out of existence. And when Vegeta was revived, he had to face a new truth: Frieza was dead, by the hands of the legendary Super Saiyan. And that Super Saiyan was Goku.

A year after the events on planet Namek, Vegeta returned to Earth, not having found Goku. Vegeta had been training during that time, and was quite a bit more powerful than before. However, he still did not achieve the rank of a Super Saiyan. After calling off his search he lives in capsule corp, Freeza and his father, King Cold, are sensed on their way to Earth, Freeza having survived the explosion of Namek. However, a young man appeared, named Trunks, transformed into a Super Saiyan, and destroyed both Freeza and his father. After the fight, Trunks explained he has come from the future in a time machine, and said that Goku will soon arrive.

Vegeta's perspective and priorities gradually change as the series progresses. Initially, he travelled to Earth desiring only power, and seeking to destroy the planet. However, as the series continues, Vegeta's goals lead him to often (unintentionally) fighting on the side of good. Many examples of his unintentional heroism are due to arrogance and his desire to prove himself better than Goku. Vegeta believes that he is the only one with the right to defeat Goku, and as such, fights Goku's enemies to prevent them from doing so. This eventually develops into him fighting in order to protect his family and his new home, the Earth, from enemies.
