Vatican: Vatican Ii

Today, therefore, the teachings of Vatican II are the current, the most recent and the most solemn expression of the Mind of the Church. Consequently, it is clearly evident that understanding the teachings, observing and carrying them forward is a serious matter. This is underlined by four Popes in The Need for Vatican II. This section ... contains the "Voices of some Council Fathers" and, in particular, the perceptions of Abbot, later Bishop, B.C. Butler OSB. His insights are of particular value for the English-speaking world. The solemn significance of an ecumenical, or general Council is explored further in Vatican II in Focus.
Not until December of 2004, when Pope John Paul II was clearly dying and the race for papal succession had begun did the Vatican open a full-scale investigation into charges against Maciel. In late May of 2005, a month after the death of the Pope and Ratzinger’s accession to his mentor’s post, charges were suddenly dropped. A Vatican spokesman would only say that there was no longer an investigation — and that none was expected in the future.

Dom Daniel Rees, a monk of Downside wrote "Christopher Butler and the Second Vatican Council were made for each other. There must have been few among the Council Fathers who could have felt, as he did, that in the conciliar theology and the spirit which it engendered, they were breathing their native air at last. It has become a commonplace that the invisible father at Vatican II was John Henry Newman. But....Newman had in Abbot Butler a mouthpiece who knew his master’s voice probably better than anyone else in the conciliar aula.” (See full article.)
The Cappella Paolina, which serves as the parish church of the Vatican, is separated from the Sistine Chapel only by the Sala Regia. It received its name from Paul III, who had it erected in 1540 by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. Before 1550 Michelangelo painted two frescoes here, the Conversion of Paul and the Crucifixion of Peter. Other paintings in the chapel are by Lorenzo Sabbatini and Federico Zuccaro. The statues in the background are by P. Bresciano. Before the opening of the conclave the Sacred College assembles in this chapel to attend a sermon in which the members are reminded of their obligation quickly to give to the Church her ablest son as ruler and guide.

Vatican II was only a beginning! The tree must be carefully fed and watered. It must be protected against the saws and axes and poison of those who fear change and prefer brittle leaves in reliquaries and gilded dry branches to fragile new shoots. It must be keept safe from the torches of others who are motivated by misguided love for what they consider the one and only "True Church." It must be allowed to become what it is meant to be, a life-bearing, life-giving, growing tree that links earth and heaven and welcomes an endless variety of flocks of believers to build nests in its vast network of branches, a genuine Tree of Life that is first and foremost a Tree of Love.
