A fleet of advanced, Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid delivery vans will be operating within the United States, powered by Lithium-ion batteries developed by Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions. The test fleet is helping to usher in a new age of extremely fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, urban transportation. "Advances in Lithium-ion battery technology are bringing the reality of plug-in hybrids closer to commercialization," said Mary Ann Wright, who leads the JCS joint venture and is vice president and general manager of Johnson Controls' hybrid battery business.

The grants, awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, provide counties the funding they need to purchase vans or small buses, many of which are specially equipped for wheelchairs. The money, which includes state and federal funds, may ... be used to acquire computer and communications equipment related to the shared-ride program.

In urban areas of the United States full-size vans have been used as commuter vans since 1971, when Dodge introduced a van that could transport up to 15 passengers. Commuter vans are used as an alternative to carpooling and other ride sharing arrangements.
