The 64th Venice Film Festival will open with "Atonement," directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Vanessa Redgrave in an adaptation of the Booker Prize-winning novel by Ian McEwan, Reuters reported. The novel spans the years from the 1930s to the end of the 20th century in relating the consequences of a monstrous lie told by a 13-year-old girl that will shatter the staid, upper-middle-class existence of an English family. The Venice festival begins on Aug. 29 and runs through Sept. 8.

At a press conference in Jerusalem Ms Redgrave appealed to the international community to contribute more to UNRWA’s Emergency Appeal for the West Bank and Gaza for 2004. So far only 30 per cent ($62 million out of $209 million) of UNRWA’s needs for the year has been pledged.

In the West Bank, Ms. Redgrave has visited A’Ram and Qalqilya to see the impact of the barrier on Palestinian communities. Thousands of refugees who rely on UNRWA’s humanitarian aid will be cut off from humanitarian services by the barrier.

IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ruth Yaron unequivocally rejected Redgrave's charge. ''The IDF completely denies such a claim. It is unbased and inaccurate,'' she said. ''The IDF has clear rules of engagement and under no circumstances takes action that endangers the life of anyone unless absolutely necessary."
