Vanessa Minnillo became Miss South Carolina Teen USA 1998, won the 1998 Miss Teen USA Pageant in succession. She was the first titleholder from South Carolina to capture the title and she conquered the Congeniality Award in the same year.

In 1997, Vanessa was encouraged to enter a beauty pageant by her boyfriend's father. That October, she was crowned Miss Teen South Carolina. The victory qualified her to compete in the national Miss Teen USA pageant. In August 1998, she swept all categories at the event, held in Shreveport, Louisiana. Unfortunately, live coverage of her remarkable win was pre-empted by a televised address by then-president Bill Clinton about the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Vanessa returned to high school, where she continued life as an honor student and head cheerleader.

Minnillo entered the public eye as Miss South Carolina Teen USA 1998, and went on to be crowned as the winner of the 1998 Miss Teen USA pageant. She was the first delegate from South Carolina to capture the title and the first winner of the pageant to be chosen as Miss Congeniality.

Vanessa and her brother settled into life with their father and stepmother in Charleston, South Carolina. Vanessa always excelled scholastically, even as she attended seven different schools while abroad, and she continued to excel at Charleston's Bishop England High School.

Subsequent to Helen's remarriage to a United States Air Force serviceman, Minnillo and her brother moved to Turkey with their mother and stepfather. By 1990, as a result of Desert Shield, Minnillo and her brother returned to their father's home, eventually settling in Charleston, South Carolina where she attended Bishop England High School and was a cheerleader.[6]
