Fred Staples (Van Heflin) has just moved to New York in anticipation of starting his new job in a big corporate office. Leaving small town Ohio behind, he finds the fast paced lifestyle a bit tough to get used to. His first day on the job brings mixed feelings as there seems to be a strange undercurrent of tension in the air. He is introduced to the other staff members including Mr. William Briggs (Ed Begley, Sr.), a veteran of the company now in the vice-president position.
