Hrist is the current Valkyrie during the time period of Valkyrie Profile 2. She is fiercely loyal to Odin's commands, which include the punishment of Dipan for defying Odin. This puts her in conflict with Alicia who, despite being exiled, does not wish to see her home destroyed. When Lezard Valeth reveals his own devious plans, Hrist joins Alicia and Brahms to save Silmeria and stop the destruction of Midgard and of their world.

In Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, you play the part of a rebellious angel who is constantly on the run from the high god Odin. This is a good metaphor for the rest of the game, as the gameplay can be as uncontrollable as the lead heroine.

Valkyrie Profile 2's wider world is divided into Fire Emblem-style location points. On the world map you simply select where you want to go and you're transported there. The aforementioned exploratory areas are rendered in full 3D but the player exists on a single 2D plane, so it's quite a surprise - when you first enter a lavishly designed and functioning town - only to be able to walk left and right and occasionally push up to enter a house or side-street. Likewise, the dungeons play in the same way, albeit ... requiring the player to make difficult jumps on the Y-axis and solve (mostly straightforward) puzzles in order to access high platforms and rare treasure chests.

Alicia is princess of Dipan, the main protagonist of Valkyrie Profile 2, and mortal host for Silmeria's soul. Alicia, having heard Silmeria's voice her entire life and learned much of what Silmeria knows, unusual for a Valkyrie's mortal host. Silmeria can take over Alicia's body when necessary but she usually leaves Alicia in control and tells her what to do instead. Other characters can sometimes detect the change between Alicia and Silmeria by their voices and mannerisms (Alicia is more timid, Silmeria is more assertive).

Attacks work exactly the same way they did in the original Valkyrie Profile. There are four party members, and each button matches to one of those members. Pressing the button causes them to attack. The strategy comes in timing the attacks to get the best result from the effort. When an enemy is attacked, it will do two things. First, every attack builds a special gauge.
