Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria: Story

When all is said and done in Valkyrie Profile 2, there is still some excitement left in the game. Players will be excited to know that the Seraphic Gate returns in all of it’s difficult glory- complete with several Tri-Ace cameos, and plenty of challenging bosses. Also, as mentioned before, Valkyrie Profile 2’s main story mode gets progressively harder with each subsequent playthrough, though the game really is hard enough the first time around, I’d hate to see it during the 50th playthrough.

The removal of Valkyrie Profile's most memorable features continues with the elimination of the Period system. Without the threat of Ragnarok (the big war) hanging in the background, Valkyrie Profile 2 removes the time constraints that were heavily imposed in the original. Although it makes for a more leisurely pace, it lends a more conventional feel to aspects such as grinding-up, story progression, and continues to restrict the genuinely creative appeal that its predecessor offered in abundance.

There's a lot to love about Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. The story's non-traditional and unpredictable nature is a welcome change from those that merely tell the same old tale with a few new words. Meanwhile, throwing the battle system into the third dimension provides more control to the player without complicating other matters. And thanks to the photon system, players are able to dictate how often they engage in battle, meaning they're free to focus on solving a dungeon's tricky puzzles if they so choose. The inability to pause cutscenes is a bummer, but that's no reason to avoid one of the most unique role-playing titles on the PlayStation 2.

Valkyrie Profile Silmeria is not your standard Japanese RPG. Not only it offers a distinct combat and skill system but its story ... provides a refreshing change from games like Final Fantasy.

That’s not to say that Valkyrie Profile 2 has completely separated itself from its predecessor. Far from it - you’ll meet several familiar faces, and the plot slowly but surely intertwines with the story of the valkyrie Lennth. Both the dungeon exploration and battle systems should ring familiar was well, but both are greatly expanded upon.
